It's the opposite of 学渣 (academic disaster), and Chinese students use it both to praise others and to wallow in their own scholarly inadequacy.

China's gaokao-dominated education system creates intense academic pressure, making top students objects of near-mythological status. As competition for elite universities intensified in the 2010s, internet culture turned the concept into a meme — half celebration, half collective sigh — reflecting anxieties about meritocracy, effort, and innate talent in a hyper-competitive society.
