Emerging around 2019–2020 amid rising youth unemployment and sky-high housing costs in Chinese cities, '精致穷' reflected a generation that couldn't afford traditional markers of success like homes or cars, but redirected spending toward affordable luxury experiences and goods. Platforms like Xiaohongshu (Little Red Book) amplified the aesthetic, turning budget-conscious consumption into a curated lifestyle brand.
