Origin

Wang Xinling posted a promo photo for her album '敢要敢不要' that some found unflattering. Instead of apologizing, she posted '主！要！看！气！质！' The defiant confidence went viral. Users adapted it into a WeChat chain game: post an intentionally unstylish selfie, caption it '主要看气质,' and if someone likes or comments, they owe you a 5.21 yuan red packet. The phrase was named one of 2015's top internet expressions.

Cultural Context

主要看气质 became the language of self-confidence regardless of conventional standards. It said: I don't need your approval, my energy speaks for itself.
