The phrase exploded as a social game — post your own 'confidence selfie' regardless of what you look like and declare that vibe is everything. Looks don't matter; aura does.
Origin
Wang Xinling posted a promo photo for her album '敢要敢不要' that some found unflattering. Instead of apologizing, she posted '主！要！看！气！质！' The defiant confidence went viral. Users adapted it into a WeChat chain game: post an intentionally unstylish selfie, caption it '主要看气质,' and if someone likes or comments, they owe you a 5.21 yuan red packet. The phrase was named one of 2015's top internet expressions.
Cultural Context
主要看气质 became the language of self-confidence regardless of conventional standards. It said: I don't need your approval, my energy speaks for itself. In 2022, Wang Xinling went viral again at age 39 by appearing on a variety show looking impossibly young — the internet re-embraced 主要看气质 as a comment on aging gracefully and with absolute confidence.
