囧 — Jiong Face
What Is 囧?
An ancient Chinese character meaning 'window' that Chinese netizens discovered looks exactly like a distressed face: the top strokes resemble furrowed brows, the lower structure forms a gaping mouth. Repurposed overnight into the internet's first great emoji.
Origin
The character 囧 (U+56E7) appears in the Shuowen Jiezi, a 2nd-century Chinese dictionary. Its internet life began around 2005–2008 when users on Baidu Tieba noticed its facial resemblance and started using it to express awkwardness and despair. By 2008 it was everywhere.
Cultural Context
囧 predates emoji in Chinese internet culture by years. It launched an entire category of character-as-emoticon memes, paving the way for ORZ, ╮(╯▽╰)╭, and the modern biaoqing ecosystem. The 2008 film 'Lost in Beijing' (导演囧途) used it in its title — mainstream confirmation of the character's cultural arrival.
How It's Used
Used for embarrassment, awkwardness, helplessness, or any flavor of 'this situation is bad and I am in it.'
