Origin

The '佛系' (Buddhist-style) concept went viral in 2017 after a WeChat article titled '第一批90后已经出家了' (The first batch of 90s kids have already become monks) described a generation of young people adopting philosophical detachment as a coping mechanism. The panda head biaoqing series immediately produced a Buddhist monk version.

Cultural Context

佛系 arrived as a response to 内卷 culture — when the race becomes impossible to win, some people stop racing. The Buddhist framing gave it spiritual weight: this isn't giving up, it's enlightenment. The sticker series let people signal this philosophy visually, usually ironically. 'One wins if one does not compete.'
