凤姐 — Sister Feng
What Is 凤姐?
Luo Yufeng (罗玉凤), better known as 凤姐 (Sister Feng), became China's first internet celebrity infamous rather than famous. She gained attention by posting flyers in Shanghai seeking a boyfriend with impossibly high standards — Tsinghua or Peking University graduate, 176-183cm, good-looking — while her own credentials were far more modest. Her unshakeable self-confidence despite universal ridicule made her a national phenomenon.
Origin
In 2009 Luo began handing out flyers on Shanghai streets seeking an elite boyfriend. The audacity went viral. In January 2010 she appeared on a major TV show, and her plastic surgery announcement, appearance on China's Got Talent, and various public antics kept her in the news throughout 2010. She later moved to New York and worked as a manicurist, eventually becoming a commentator on Chinese society.
Cultural Context
凤姐 was a 谜之自信 (mysterious confidence) meme before that phrase existed — someone whose self-image vastly exceeded how others saw her. Chinese internet mocked and celebrated her simultaneously. She represented both the cruel side of internet fame and a defiant refusal to accept the identity others assigned her. She later redeemed herself as a thoughtful social commentator.
How It's Used
Used to represent unshakeable confidence that ignores external judgment. 'The 凤姐 energy' = demanding standards far above what anyone would grant you.
