狗头/Doge — Doge (Shiba Inu)
What Is 狗头/Doge?
A photograph of Kabosu, a Shiba Inu dog sitting on a couch and looking sideways at the camera with raised eyebrows. Became the defining image of 'Doge' meme culture — typically accompanied by Comic Sans text in broken English ('much wow', 'very meme', 'such amaze'). Deeply embedded in Chinese internet culture as both a standalone meme and the origin of the 狗头 (dog head) irony marker.
Origin
Atsuko Sato posted photos of her rescue Shiba Inu Kabosu to her blog on February 13, 2010. The sideways-glancing photo remained obscure until 2013, when it locked in as the defining Doge image after going viral on Reddit. By December 2013, Know Your Meme named it the top meme of the year. Chinese internet adopted it simultaneously and enthusiastically.
Cultural Context
In China, Doge did double duty. First as the original Western meme — 'much 内卷, very 躺平' style adaptations flourished. Then the 狗头 emoji (🐶) evolved from Doge's legacy into a uniquely Chinese sarcasm marker: appending 🐶 to any statement signals 'I am not being serious right now.' The dog's silly, self-aware energy became Chinese internet's built-in irony mode.
How It's Used
Used as a reaction image, or appended as 🐶 to any sarcastic statement. 'I love working overtime 🐶' means the exact opposite.
